The city will be lifting its indoor mask mandate on March 1, Mayor Brandon M. Scott during a Thursday, Feb. 24 press conference.
"Dr. D and I will continue to follow the science and allow the data to drive our decision making and as a result of our work to provide PPE and community testing to our residents, we are continuing to see a significant decline in our city's COVID-19 metrics," Scott said.
After the Maryland State Board of Education voted to remove the mask requirement on Tuesday, Feb. 22, local school districts will have the authority to enforce masking policies in the classroom, he said.
Businesses also could opt to keep mask mandates in place if they so desire, CBS13 reports.
Baltimore's positivity rate, as of Feb. 22, was 2.03 percent, which shows a 77 percent decrease from a positivity level of 8.72 percent just a month prior, city Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa said.
"However, the pandemic is not over," she emphasized. "Residents are still being infected and hospitalized with COVID-19."
She urged residents to continue to get tested and vaccinated, among other protocols.
